Django Unchained (Drama 2012)

Tarantino's movies always seem the same to me and this one fits the bill to a tee. Vengeance, blood, and some interesting dialog sprinkled in...that's what this movie was all about.

I guess it was an OK flick but it was pretty mind-numbing as well. Had a simple plot, some nice accents, good actors, and there you go. The N-word was used a couple hundred times so that was noticeable. Yeah not much else to say...I will probably never re-watch this film, just like I have never re-watched Kill Bill.

Wreck-It Ralph (Animated Cartoon 2012)

This movie was great. Let's just get it out there. I've been quite disappointed with Disney and/or Pixar as of late because it has been so long since they've actually put in the effort to make a good cartoon, but this movie was excellent.

Yeah a lot of major things in this film just came together really well from the voice acting, characters, music, and story. It was all above average and seemed to have just enough character development so that the audience gave a shit about the primaries they were supposed to. It was a totally different feel from Brave which was quite bad for a Pixar film. But yeah props to this one, any age will enjoy it. Some maybe more than others if you've ever played the arcade games in it.

Les Misérables (Musical 2012)

So this movie goes in the mediocre pile even though it seems as though everyone else thought it was great. If you've ever gone to a real theater production of this, you'll know that real-life is much better and has way better music accompaniment.

I think this film was just to introduce the newfangled generation to theater with some big name actors singing. Many of them sucked if you didn't notice, especially Russel Crowe. So yeah that's my take. Watch it in real life and skip the movie.

Lincoln (Drama 2012)

So there were two things I learned from this movie; politics is some sketchy shit and that Marry Todd Lincoln was a crazy bat. I guess I can relate to some of that hu? This movie had a lot of talking...I mean a lot. If you're not in the mood for a slow and lengthy film then this is not for you.

The story was mainly the whole political struggle in getting the 13th Amendment passed to abolish slavery. It's interesting how fucked up politics were back in the 19th Century and that has most certainly not changed up to the present day.

Daniel Day Lewis and Sally Field were excellent in their roles...quite on the mark with both. Costumes were pretty authentic-looking as well. Overall it was a good film but you really have to be paying attention.

On Silver Wings (Warrior's Wings Book One) by Evan Currie (Book 2011)

Pretty good new series here. This is a military Sci-Fi story that follows around a futuristic SF chica soldier as she wages a guerrilla war against an invading force on an outlying colonized planet. It's set pretty far into the future so there's space travel but they still use missiles and nukes, no lasers. I don't think they have shields either. There were some pretty detailed space battles so that mixed up the action a bit.

Overall the book had a strong plot, a mysterious enemy, and decent writing; great start to a new series. There are two more books in the series so I'll definitely be jumping on those in the near future.

Zero Dark Thirty (Drama 2012)

This one was pretty good, but it was a slow drama. Torture scenes weren't over the top, as some media outlets alluded to. I'm sure the CIA totally does a lot worse stuff than they showed in this movie.

We all know the story so it was interesting to see a director's interpretation of the events. The whole thing was put together very well so that's definitely a positive. The director, Kathryn Bigelow, does create some good films.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Fantasy Adventure 2012)

Well this sure wasn't LOTR, that's for damn sure. This one was quite slow, a bit boring, and none of the characters struck me as being interesting. Without that type of attachment, you're just along for an overextended ride down subpar lane.

This film, if shrunk down, would feel more like watching extended cut-scenes. It didn't feel like a complete movie; and yes, I know there will be others to clear the actual story, but it really felt odd in that it was very much a small part of a large, longer movie. I don't know how else to say it other than it was blah all the way to the bank.

Arisen: Genesis By Michael Stephen Fuchs (Book 2012)

This book is the prequel to the whole Arisen series and you know what, it wasn't half bad. It had a good story, different characters, and enough action to keep it going. I'll be interesting to see if it ties back into the main series. The author kinda set it up to do this so it may be a cross-continental adventure in future books.

Life of Pi (Drama 2012)

So I think this movie was supposed to be spiritual or something but I didn't really see it that way. As a standalone film it was pretty good but I totally know that there was some deeper meaning mixed into it but call me a simpleton, I just didn't see it.

I mainly saw this movie as an artsy survival flick as the main character has to try to survive on the open ocean while dealing with a tiger on a life boat. Anything else beyond that went too deep.

Visuals and music were good as well as the atmospheric mood but yeah it took a religion direction which I'm not a fan of. Overall it was a nice story though...great acting on the part of the primary.
