Civilization IV (Turn-Based Strategy PC Game 2005)

Quite recently D2D has been selling chunks of games for $5 each. This is essentially a meal at a local drive-thru so I thought I would give one a shot.

This game was on my radar way back in the day when it got released. I have usually stayed away from turn-based strategy games because I can't remember one that I ever liked, but I thought I would give this one a try.

In a nutshell, there is a very good reason things in one's mind are the way they are. Even though this game was very well-polished, I just can't stand turn-based games...they feel so damn slow and artificial. The main thing that pissed me off was the combat. If I have a huge 20-unit army marching on your small-ass village with one warrior unit guarding it, I am expecting to eradicate your city real quick. I am not expecting the computer to choose one unit from my army to do battle with the solitary defensive unit and continue this type of solo-battle in turns until the guarding unit is destroyed. This just isn't a realistic approach to battles.

There were other things that bothered me but I don't know if it's because of my general dislike of the genre or if it's a realistic complaint...I'll vote for the former just to be safe.

Blood: The Last Vampire (Action 2009)

I would like to say that this film was good just because the Anime movie and series were in the decent range, but I'd so be lying. One good thing for some viewers was that everything was in English so there wasn't horrible dubbing or anything else fishy.

The movie felt like a crappy Marvel know like Daredevil or something, but not quite that bad. The action was fair, but they played out the animated blood a little too much. The fight scenes were also way too long and should've all been cut in half considering the main chick was doing the exact same thing in all of them. All of the white chick actors seemed to be very B-class also. I wouldn't watch it again, not even if it were playing in the background.

Observe and Report (Comedy 2009)

I think this movie came out around the same time Paul Blart: Mall Cop did. Why do they do that? It was the same with The Illusionist and The Prestige and also Armageddon and Deep Impact. Of course one movie will always win out, and in this case, this one did.

The film was another mall security one where the main guy is kinda a loser as he tries to get with some hot chick. The main difference is that Seth Rogen's character cusses a lot while Paul Blart was much more PG. I laughed once throughout the course of this film, so although it did happen, it still didn't make it as humorous as any of Rogen's other movies....Knocked Up comes to mind.

So yeah this one is definitely not worth a rent, but I guess it might be worth it if you somehow watch it for free.

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne by David Gaider (Book 2009)

This was a book that was released as in introduction into the world of Dragon Age, a new game from Bioware. Hopefully the game doesn't turn out to suck or else I'll blame it squarely on EA's acquisition of the company.

The story was pretty average for a fantasy one, but none of the characters were interesting enough to make it any better. The plot and writing were also average but that's not necessarily a bad thing. What's bad is when you have a detailed story in the beginning and middle of a book but then hella falter during the end and make summary type of chapters. By this I mean 70% of the story was well detailed 1st person accounts and then 30% is a reader's digest written from hearsay. I've never seen this done in a book before this one but man is it kinda disappointing. Hopefully the game is better.

Peacock (Foreign Chinese Drama 2005)

Well here's an odd foreign flick that I doubt anyone else will ever see. It felt much like a dark comedy without the comedy part. It was your average Chinese flick where there are a bunch of "no talking" scenes and you're supposed to sit there and guess stuff all day long. Drama was very slow.

The plot followed around this family who just had really bad luck. One kid was fat, half-retarded, and got bullied by peeps all day long. Another kid was this dreamer chick who was just stupid in terms of decisions. And the last kid was a lanky weirdo of sorts. At the end of the movie there was this scene where, I think, the theme of it was that none of the kids ever blossomed like a peacock when it fluffs its wings. Yeah....go 4th grade similes. I waded through close to 3 hours for that kind of an ending.
