For Honor We Stand (Man of War Book 2) by H. Paul Honsinger (Book 2014)

So this second iteration of the Man of War series built upon everything from the first book. If you enjoyed the first, then this second one is right up your alley.

Even though I do like the author's writing, and his ability to really build up some of its characters, I can't help but comment on the fact that the main protagonist seems to be infallible to anything and everything. He never makes a mistake and totally commands his spaceship as if he has many decades of experience under his belt. I know the character is touted as being a tactical genius of sorts, but it gets a bit tiring to read about a fresh-faced command officer who never makes any mistakes.

Additionally, at times he seems to have a holier-than-thou attitude towards certain behaviors of his crew, which adds to the arrogance of the primary. I do like the story and where it's going with the third book, but yeah the main character seems more and more like an impossibility in the world of Sci-Fi fiction.

Dragon Age: Inquisition (3rd Person RPG PS4 Game 2014)

So I repurchased a PS4 just to play this game. Funny how you get into certain moods sometimes. Was it worth the hassle? Sorta. The thing that sucked about it was that on the PS4, the controls kinda sucked. I didn't like how combat was handled, the pausing/strategic view wasn't well done, and yeah I think it was meant to be controlled from a PC's setup with a KB.

The story and gameplay were good, but I liked Dragon Age: Origins more. The gameplay got super repetitive after only a few maps though. The areas to explore were huge, but they all sorta felt the same. In addition to this, you always had to spend a ton of time upgrading weapons, armor, runes, etc or else you'd start sucking as you leveled more. I remember having to do this type of stuff with Mass Effect as well, but with that Bioware game it seemed way more entertaining and quick. Anyway this game was fair even though it was clunky. I ended up going on a vacation, coming back, forgot where I was or what I was doing, tried to take on a dragon, got my ass handed to me because nobody followed orders like they were supposed to, then I ejected the disc and promptly took a picture of it so that it could be sold.

My only advice to anyone who wants to play this game is to play it on the PC if you have a choice, and if you don't, do not go on vacation and let this game sit for too long or else you'll forget everything about it.

The Imitation Game (Drama 2014)

So this movie was just a much better version of the 2001 movie Enigma. It goes to show how much better the same story can be reinvented using different actors and modern movie-making styles. Yeah Cumberbatch is a pimp with his skills; he's a totally different guy from Star Trek's Khan.

The plot itself has been told several times over, so it's not worth going over for the x-teenth time as they didn't sway away from the original WWII story. Either way, it was a good drama movie. Good pacing, acting, and environmental setting.

Unbroken (War Drama 2014)

So this movie was OK, but it really wasn't as good as it was touted to be. The style was too 'light' with regards to the negative aspects of war. There was definitely a night/day difference between this film and something like Fury.

The movie told the story of an aviator in WWII who was shot down in the Pacific and then captured by the Japanese and held as a POW. He and others had to endure a lot of crap during their captivity and yeah that's it. When you look at movie-making it should've been a lot more raw, but it wasn't so that makes this movie very PG in terms of war flicks.

Nice story and all, and props to the real guy this film was based on, but as a movie it could've been so much more with a different director and screenplay.
